1. Technical Description
1.1 General
The 020 powerhead is virtually the same as that
of the 020 T. The only differences are the handle
system and the arrangement of the carburetor with
manifold, air filter and compensator. In addition,
the 020 is equipped with an intake air preheating
system for winter operation.
The following descriptions therefore refers to these
specific assemblies only.
1.2 Mixture Control System
1.2.1 Compensator
The 020’s mixture control system is equipped with
a compensator. A completely new feature is that
the connecting channel (arrow) between the
carburetor and air filter is shaped to double as a
grommet which protects and guides the carburetor
adjusting screws.
The compensator keeps the fuel content in the
mixture constant at all times, irrespective of air
filter contamination. The combustion mixture can
no longer become over-rich. And it is no longer
necessary to alter the setting of the high speed
screw when the air filter gets dirtier.
For a more detailed description of operation see
TI 07.91 (STIHL 066).

1.2.2 Carburetor
Compared with the 020 T, the carburetor has been
modified. Its metering chamber end cover has a
connecting stub for the compensator. The lever on
the choke shaft has a dual attachment point for the
020 and 020 T and the adjusting screws are
sealed with an O-ring.
The position of the carburetor has been adapted to
suit the different handle system. Page 3 of 4

1.2.3 Air Filter
The air filter is a large-area round element
equipped with a connecting stub for the
compensator. Its main features are an excellent
retention rate, long service life and easy handling.
Cleaning is necessary only when there is a
noticeable loss of engine power.
Removal and installation
Snap-on hooks hold the filter in position on the
filter base. No tools are needed for removal. After
taking off the carburetor box cover, the filter is
simply lifted up a little and pulled away to the rear.
To clean the inside of the element it is necessary
to remove the filter end cover by pressing the other
end of the element against a firm, flat base. The co-
ver must be refitted after cleaning so that it snaps
into place.

The compensator stub automatically locates in the
connecting channel when the filter is refitted, and
the snap-on hooks are engaged by applying slight
pressure.
1.3 Intake Air Preheating System
With the intake air preheating system, heated
cooling air flows over the carburetor and is sucked
in as preheated combustion air through the filter.
This helps prevent the air filter and carburetor
icing up in cold operating conditions.
2
A cutout (1), which can be opened or closed with a
shutter (2), is provided for this purpose in the new
tank housing and carburetor box (handle frame).
Intake air preheating should only be activated at
temperatures below approx. 10 °C. It is necessary
to change back to the summer position at
temperatures above about 10 °C to avoid engine
running problems.
