Powerhead, model name, engine series: what is the difference?

On this site, the 4-digit engine series is the organizing key because it is the closest public shorthand for a shared powerhead platform: bore/stroke family, crankcase generation, and core parts architecture. The sales name is what users search; the series number is what prevents bad fitment assumptions.

Powerhead

The engine/body unit before bar and chain: crankcase, cylinder, ignition/fuel system, handles, clutch side and oiling hardware.

Engine series

The 4-digit STIHL family number used throughout this guide. It groups related models, but it does not make every part interchangeable.

Model name

The retail label: MS 250, 038 Magnum, MS 261 C-M. Names can include suffixes for features, markets, or electronic systems.

The rule that protects fitment

Parts do not safely interchange just because two saws share displacement, pitch, or a familiar model number. Use the series page for family context, then verify the exact model, serial range, and installed bar/chain before ordering parts.

Examples

SeriesFamilyWhy it matters
1123 021/023/025 · MS 210/230/250 One powerhead family can include several sales names and suffixes; the series page keeps those variants together with shared fitment caveats.
1141 MS 261 · MS 271 · MS 291 One powerhead family can include several sales names and suffixes; the series page keeps those variants together with shared fitment caveats.
1128 044/046 · MS 440/460/461 One powerhead family can include several sales names and suffixes; the series page keeps those variants together with shared fitment caveats.

How to identify yours

  1. Read the model badge and suffix letters; decode suffixes on the model codes page.
  2. Find the matching model in Browse models.
  3. Open the series page to see displacement range, bar mount, chain spec, production span, and data confidence.
  4. For bars and chains, confirm pitch, gauge, and drive-link count stamped on the installed bar.
  5. For service parts, treat the table as a starting reference and verify by serial-specific parts lookup.

This is why the hub chart remains affiliate-free while browsing: first identify the powerhead family, then use the model or family page when you are ready to match parts.
