How close can you get to a STIHL manufacture year?

Start with the model's production span, not the serial number. Public serial-number year decoding is incomplete, market-specific, and often requires dealer systems, so this site reports sourced production ranges and confidence tags rather than pretending every saw has a public date code.

The safe workflow

  1. Find the model page. Use Browse models to get its production span and engine series — or, if the housing is legible, look the serial up, which names the model directly. That identifies what the machine is; it still will not date it, for the reasons below.
  2. Check the family timeline. The timeline shows where that engine family sits historically and which family replaced it.
  3. Read the prefix/series number. The 4-digit casting/part-number family is usually more useful for identification than the sales name alone.
  4. Use labels and version clues. Emissions labels, M-Tronic labels, feature suffixes, and IPL revisions can narrow a saw within a span.
  5. Treat exact serial-year claims as provisional. Unless a public STIHL source or dealer lookup backs the date, keep it as an estimate.

A serial-number year decoder. The serial lookup here names the model, because that mapping is recorded and can be cited — but STIHL allocates serials in blocks by plant and product line rather than in one running sequence, so the same number says nothing reliable about a date. Serial-to-year tables are not trustworthy enough for this reference unless they can be cited and bounded.

Why ranges matter

STIHL reused similar model numbers across different eras and markets. A sales name can stay familiar while the powerhead family changes, or a family can remain current in one market after being superseded in another. That is why this dataset separates model roster years, family era, and confidence.

Current dataset scope: 43 gas engine families, 17 marked current somewhere. If you have a dated label, invoice, dealer printout, or IPL revision that narrows a production span, send a correction.
