STIHL 3/8”Oilomatic Picco-Micro Saw Chain – Type 3997
1. New chain link geometry
1.1 Cutters
Compared to type 3876, the new cutters are higher
overall (A) and feature:
. 2 mm (0.08”) longer top plate (D) for an
increased wear life
. steeper top plate rake angle (B) for higher
cutting efficiency
. shorter depth gauge (C) for better cutting
performance
. material added on bottom of cutter (E) for
improved wear resistance
1.2 Drive links
The drive links are no longer “necked” (F). Benefits
are
. improved drability
. fatigue strength increased by 40%
1.3 Oilomatic oil reservoir
Drive links have additional Oilomatic oil hole (G) for
. improved chain and bar lubrication
. reduced cutting attachment wear
The STIHL Oilomatic chain lubricating system with
the additional oil reservoir is described in detail in TI
39.96.

1.4 Conclusion 1.5 Service note
The new chain link geometry offers the following Component parts of the previous (3876) and new
improvements over the previous type 3876: (3997) chains must not be mixed together. Although
mixing is physically possible, it may result in erratic
. 25% longer wear life
running behavior or faults.
. 16% higher cutting efficiency

Most of these PDFs embed fonts with a shifted character map, so the text above was recovered rather than copied — read it as a faithful but imperfect transcription, and treat the page image above each block as the authority where the two disagree — the figures exist only there, because they are vector drawings that text extraction cannot keep.
