New Sales Designations for STIHL Chain saws
The introduction of new models, versions and the
implementation of innovations means that the range
of chain saws is growing ever larger. We have
already reached the limits of the existing naming
structure. The model number structure of STIHL
chain saws will be brought into line with that of
STIHL power tools to ensure that there is plenty of
room for future expansion.
A two-letter prefix will indicate the product group as
with STIHL power tools, i.e. FS (brushcutters), HS Round name plate in fan housing
(hedge trimmers), TS (cut-off machines) etc.: MS = Example: MS 390 (previously 039)
Motor Saw (chain saw). The subsequent model
designation will continue to have three digits, but the
initial “0” has been dropped.
The round name plates introduced to coincide with
this change are now clipped to the side of the fan
housing instead of being on the top of the machine.

Most of these PDFs embed fonts with a shifted character map, so the text above was recovered rather than copied — read it as a faithful but imperfect transcription, and treat the page image above each block as the authority where the two disagree — the figures exist only there, because they are vector drawings that text extraction cannot keep.
