STIHL 3/8” Oilomatic Picco Mini Saw Chain – Series 3982

1. New chain link geometry

1.1 Cutters
Compared to type 3987, the new cutters feature:
                                                              A
. Cutting edge (A) moved to rear
                                                                        B
. Steeper top plate rake angle (B)
      Benefits: Improved cutting efficiency
      (about 6%) and better plunge-cutting
      performance (57%)

                                                                                         689TI035 KN
. More material on bottom (C) of cutters and tie
straps for improved wear resistance and longer
      service life

                                                                  C C

                                                                                         689TI036 KN
1.2 Drive links
Drive links now have a constant thickness of 5,56 5,36
.043 in (1.1 mm) (D) compared to .050 in (1.3 mm)
(reduced to .043 in or 1.1 mm at bottom)

1.3 Cutting width
Reducing the drive link thickness by 0.2 mm (D)
automatically reduces the chain width and cutting
                                                                                         689TI038 KN

width by 0.2 mm (3.6%).
                                                                             D
Benefits:
. Less chip-removing work means that less drive Dimensions in millimeters
power is required Dark areas show new profile
. Higher cutting capacity without increasing
      engine power

1.4 Oilomatic oil reservoir
Drive links have additional Oilomatic oil hole (E) for
. improved chain and bar lubrication
. reduced cutting attachment wear

The STIHL Oilomatic chain lubricating system with
the additional oil reservoir is described in detail in
TI 39.96.

                                                                                                              689TI037 KN
1.5 Service note Dark areas show new profile
Drive links and preset tie straps of the previous
(3987) and new (3982) chains must not be mixed
together. Similarly, avoid using previous and new
drive links in one and the same chain, even in
combination with the correct tie straps.
Previous (3987) and new (3982) cutters and tie
straps without rivets should not be mixed together.
Although mixing is physically possible, it may result
in problems.
