3. Symbols for nylon lines
1. Nylon line with pentagonal
shaped cross-section Due to demands by a number of markets, nylon line
with a pentagonal cross-section has been made
available. This is in addition to the previous range of
round, square and X lines.
1.1 Advantages and principle of operation
The advantages and principle of operation
described for square line in section 1 of Technical
Information 13.2003 can also be applied in modified
form for the new pentagon line, when the features
described in the following sections are also taken
Cross-sections of STIHL nylon line into account.

1.2 Colors, dimensions and symbol 1.3 Use
1.3.1 Modified trimmer heads
The new pentagonal lines can be used in all those
STIHL heads which were modified in conjunction
with the introduction of square lines. Details
concerning the modifications in the mowing heads
are described in sections 2 and 3 of Technical
Information 13.2003.
The pentagonal lines can be used in the following
heads:
– STIHL TrimCut™ 30-2, TrimCut™ 40-2 and
TrimCut™ 50-2
The dimensions and colors of the new pentagonal
line are the same as those of the comparable round – STIHL AUTOCUT® 25-2, AUTOCUT® 30-2,
versions. AUTOCUT® 40-2 and 40-4
A circle (2) enclosing the outermost points on the
perimeter of the pentagonal line (1) yields the
nominal size of this type of line. This nominal size,
in turn, corresponds to the diameter of a round 1.3.2 Unchanged trimmer heads
STIHL nylon line.
The pentagonal lines can also be used in cut form
A new symbol has been introduced to identify the (short line lengths) in the following trimmer heads:
nominal size of the new pentagonal line:
– STIHL PolyCut™ 10-3, 20-3 and 40-3
(after removal of the blades in each case)
– STIHL Fixed line head,
FixCut™ 5-2 and FixCut™ 25-2
The sectional area of the pentagonal line is slightly
smaller than that of a round line with the same
nominal size. The use of only round nylon line is recommended
for use in the STIHL AUTOCUT® trimmer heads
unless the spool has been upgraded (refer to TI
13.2003).
1.2.1 Correlation of dimensions and colors
The automatic systems of the STIHL SuperCut™
Nominal size Color of nylon line trimmer heads are designed exclusively for the use
[inches] of round nylon line.

The complete range of pentagonal lines is listed in
section 1.4 "New nylon lines".

2.2 Colors, dimensions and symbol
A new symbol has been introduced to identify
the nominal size of the X-shaped line:
The sectional area of an X-shaped line is larger than
that of a round line with the same nominal size.
The complete range of X-shaped lines is listed in
section 2.3 "New X-shaped lines".
The nominal size of the X-shaped line corresponds
to the edge length (a) of the X-section.
The new line is uniformly neon-green,
regardless of the diameter.
The new line consequently differs in this respect
from the dark-green square version.

3. Symbols for nylon lines
The number of symbols for nylon line featured in Symbol Description
STIHL publications has increased as the range of
Round line 1)
STIHL nylon lines is constantly enlarged to
include lines of different cross-section. All the
symbols in use at present are summarized in the
following table. Round "quiet" line
The symbols are shown in color in multi-color
publications. In such cases, the color of the Square line 2)
symbol corresponds to the color of the nylon line.
Pentagonal line
X-shaped line
1) This symbol is also used instead of the version
Ø = diameter according to DIN (German
industrial standards).
2) This symbol is used instead of the version
as the symbol with diagonal line may be
confused with the Ø symbol when miniaturized.

Most of these PDFs embed fonts with a shifted character map, so the text above was recovered rather than copied — read it as a faithful but imperfect transcription, and treat the page image above each block as the authority where the two disagree — the figures exist only there, because they are vector drawings that text extraction cannot keep.
