  Chainsaw STIHL MS 440 – Series 1128

  Cylinder mounting
  (crankcase, cylinder, screws)
As of Machine No. 1 62 936 786, the crankcase
halves and the screws used for mounting the
cylinder are changed in order to improve the screw
connection between the crankcase and the cylinder.

  Crankcase
Longer threaded inserts are used on the two halves
of the crankcase. In future, the cylinder will be
secured to the crankcase with screws (M5x25)
which are 0.197 in (5 mm) longer than the present
  screws.

                                                       Left: old threaded insert
Right: longer threaded inserts in the crankcase

                                                       Spare parts
The part number of the crankcase remains
                                                       unchanged.

Screws Cylinder
The old screw M5x20 (9022 371 1020) is replaced
by the version M5x25 (9022 371 1050).
Spare parts
The old screw M5x20 remains available for use in
crankcases with short threaded inserts.
Repair note
The new, 0.197 in (5 mm) longer screw M5x25 may
be used only together with the longer threaded
inserts.

The longer screw M5x25 cannot be used on
                                                   cylinders with ribs (a).
The longer screw M5x25 can be used on cylinders
                                                   without ribs (b).
If, during repairs, a new crankcase (with loner
threaded inserts; see "Repair note") is combined
with a cylinder with ribs (a), the shorter screws
                                                   M5x20 must be used.
In order to ensure uniform thermal expansion, the
cylinder must always be secured with four screws of
                                                   the same length.

When servicing the saw, only the following
combinations of crankcase and screws are
permitted:
a = 0.472 ± 0.020 in       M5x20
(12 ± 0.5 mm) 9022 371 1020
a = 0.669 ± 0.020 in       M5x25
(17 ± 0.5 mm 9022 371 1050
The tightening torque remains unchanged at
102 lbf in (11.5 Nm).

                                                                                 TI_30_2004_30_01_01.fm
