1. Technical description
STIHL has developed a new harvester chain, the 1.1 Identifying features of the RMHS
Rapid Micro Harvester Special chain, designed to
withstand the high loads imposed in professional
timber harvesting.
The RMHS chain with convex riveting will replace
the .404" RMH chain with 0.080 in (2.0 mm) drive
link in future.
Drive links, tie straps, cutters and rivets have been
reinforced considerably on the .404" RMHS chain.
The letters "HS" feature in the cutters of the new
chain. Arrow heads in the tie straps indicate the
direction of movement of the chain.

1.4 Drive links
Patented, asymmetrically shaped cutter heels
enlarge the running face. This considerably reduces
the pressure on the cutters – and extends the
service life.
The drive links are reinforced around the rivet holes.
The part of the drive link which runs in the guide bar
groove is recessed – thickness of the drive link
equals 0.080 in (2.0 mm).

Rapid Micro Harvester Special chain is available
with 370 and 740 drive links (25 and 50 feet).
A chain roll with 1480 drive links (100 feet) is not
available.
4.3 Cut lengths

the same cut lengths as Rapid Micro Harvester

5. Before using the chain

to reduce the load on the chain, guide bar and

In order to use the advantages of these wide
running faces and increase the chain life, care must
be taken to ensure that the running faces are of the
same width on the chain, guide bar and sprocket.

.404" standard tools cannot be used for chain
breaking and rivet spinning.
The spinning head and thrust screw for .404" chain
pitch must be used for riveting with the NG 5 and
NG 7 bench mounted rivet spinners used by
dealers.
Considerable forces must be applied and great care
taken when breaking chain and spinning rivets with
the NG 4, NG 5 and NG 7 hand operated tools. The
newly fitted links and / or adjacent links may be
damaged and cause the chain to fail if the work is
not carried out properly.
