current production FS 85 R brushcutters.
The new special harvester is suitable for harvesting
olives, nuts, etc. It should not be used for harvesting
fruit intended for the table, e.g. cherries, plums,
apples and pears. 1.1 Service Note
The new STIHL SP 81 has been designed primarily
for private occasional users, small farmers and part-
time farmers.
The machine is equipped with a powerful Series
4137 powerhead (0.95 kW / 1.3 PS) which is also
used in the time-proven STIHL FS 80 and FS 85
brushcutters, for example, see “1. Technical
Description”.

3. Attachments 3.1 Retrofitting Loop Handle with Barrier Bar
Do not remove the handle hose (1) from the drive
tube when mounting the attachment since it is used
as a spacer to achieve the prescribed clearance for
the loop handle. Sleeve 0000 711 2500 may also be
used in place of the handle hose.
. Push the handle hose (1) up to the carrying
ring (2).
. Mount the loop handle (3) at distance (A) of
about 20 cm in front of the control handle (4).
The following attachments are approved for
operation with the STIHL SP 81:
- STIHL BF pick tine cultivator 1)
- STIHL FH power scythe 1)

3.1.2 Removing the Handle
The loop handle has to be removed again when the
machine is used as a special harvester.
Leave the handle hose on the drive tube.
To avoid damage to the special harvester, do not run
the rakes (1) off load.

. Pay attention to the tree’s limb structure during
operation.
. Comb the tree or bush from the inside outwards
in the direction of the tips of the branches.
. Do not hold the unit in one spot for too long so
as not to damage leaves and branches.
. Accelerate the engine and comb the branches

sections of the tree.
4.3 Lubrication
4.3.1 Rake Drive
1 1
413TI034 KN
In order to avoid consequential damage, do not
continue working with the machine if a rake (1) or
one of its tines (3) is broken. Always replace a
damaged rake.
4.2 Working Techniques
Regular inspection and lubrication of the joints of the
rake drive (every 30 hours of operation) ensures
smooth operation and prolongs wear life.
Bearing points that are not properly lubricated wear
at a faster rate due to the ingress of dust and/or
liquid organic material and may damage the rake
drive.
The bearing points (arrows) of the chain connectors
(1) must always be well lubricated.

)m~ge 8 Technical Information 45.2005
If the machine is used frequently, check lubrication
at regular weekly intervals. Clean and lubricate the
bearing points if necessary.
If the machine is used occasionally, check
lubrication at regular monthly intervals. Clean and
lubricate the bearing points if necessary.
STIHL SP bearing grease must be used for
lubrication – see 5.1.
The correct lubricating procedure is described in
TI 38.2005.
. Close the rakes and set them to their closest
4.3.2 Gearhead point – the forkhead should be at the bottom of
its stroke.
. With forefinger and thumb, grip the gullets of the
inner tines and gently squeeze the rakes
together.
. Measure the distance (a) between the tips of the
tines – do not bend the tines in this process.
The lubricant in the gearhead must be checked
about every 30 hours of operation and replenished
as necessary.
STIHL gear lubricant for hedge trimmers must be
used for lubrication – see 5.1.

hours of operation by the servicing dealer. . Measure the distance (b) between the tips of the
tines – do not bend the tines in this process.
The correct lubricating procedure is described in
TI 38.2005. The difference between the two dimensions (b - a)
must be less than 4 mm. If this is not the case,
check the rake drive and gearhead and repair as
4.4 Maintenance necessary.
4.4.1 Checking Rake Clearance
It is important to regularly check the clearance
between the two rakes to ensure correct operation
and prolong the service life of the gearhead and
rake drive.

A “rake kit” for repairing the rake drive is available
under part number 4231 740 7251. This kit contains
2 rakes, 2 chain connectors and 1 forkhead.
This kit should be used to replace all parts of the
rake drive even if only one side is worn.
When servicing or repairing the clutch, always install
retainers with part number 1127 162 3000. Do not
install the retainers (1121 162 3000) which were
previously used in Series 4137 powerheads (see TI
42.2004).
